Brand focus – Swriss watches

There are not many brands who dare to rival the Swatch group or Swatch itself. The main reason is because they are considered more than a powerhouse, they are a cult.

Let’s not forget that in the middle of the quartz crisis, the Swiss industry was obliged to reinvent itself, and the fun, affordable and fresh approach from Swatch was the key of the success, not only they brought the revenue back but they also inspired a new generation of young people to be collectors.

Of course is hard to offer an alternative to a well known design, but the people from Swriss are here to make us smile and re-connect with this feeling again, after all, watches should be well made, fun and affordable.

We are very lucky to have here their full line up and we are going deep into what it’s a cool brand out of left field. The are 3 versions that we would look more in depth: the Thin Line which is their minimalist version, the Arab Fun and then the Mecca Art, a good plot twist.

Let’s begin.

The specifications

There are several distinctive characteristics from all Swriss watches, they are all very thin at 9.3 which is part of their charm. The case diameter is 41mm which you might think is a tad large but because their watches are restrained to a 49mm in lug width they become very manageable, especially for my 6.25 inch wrist.

With a case made of high grade plastic, the watches feel strong and ready to take on plenty of activities, it is quite a good companion.

Its integrated silicone strap is unique to the watch with a different end lug, it has a good quality and it is soft enough to allow some breathing room. Depending on the model, you would get variations and because is paired with a double loop buckle, the watch would stay in place on top of your wrist with ease.

The quartz movement is quiet and works great while controlled by the small crown. There’s no date to keep the symmetry while providing 50 meters of water resistance, a good package for the price (we will touch this point later).

On the wrist

As mentioned with the dimensions described, all the watches wear well and feel unobtrusive. The weight is minimal making the watches feel like a second skin. They are perfect for the gym or even when you want something to ‘’grab and go’’, no setting and no fuzz, just pure wearing pleasure.

I wore most of the watches at the gym and at home, they are quite nice to enjoy once you go out of the house and the light hits, the printing quality of the dials become more apparent. The size is also something to enjoy, mainly because of the larger diameter which leaves space for the dial to breathe. It is worth to highlight that they are in a quite deep black colour scheme so they actually feel smaller than they are.

Legibility is also a good point from the watches. The large printed numerals or batons allow a good read with just a glance, the warmth of the crystal takes over their black dials, it is a great combination to enjoy.

The models

The Mecca Art

This watch has easily become one of my favorite dials for affordable watches. The gilt colour of the Arab calligraphy just oozes class and sophistication. This particular version has been done in collaboration with the luxury company Splendore Unique. The Mecca Art not only brings quality but also something completely different, a new aesthetic almost impossible to conceive at this price point.

The Thin Line

This particular version, to me at least, is their most iconic. It blends a minimalist aura but avoids been simple because of the colour mix. The red branding paired with thin/large indices in white feels quite elegant. And the iconic stick brushed hands are perfect to distinguish time in a glance. The versatility of the Thin Line makes sense in almost any situation, it is that good.

The Arab Fun

No trio would be completed without a version using good and ancient eastern Arabic numerals. It is incredible how much the watch changes with a small design choice, but it does. I am still not sure why the watch name includes the word ‘’fun’’ but I am glad it does as it gives a twist to a watch that can be considered very sober, a good reminder that these are watches, they are supposed to make you smile.

Concluding thoughts

No mater what your choice is, these watches from Swriss are very affordable and durable I might add. The Mecca art is the priciest of them at only 60 GBP leaving the Arab fun and Thin Line at 55 GBP each. It is a great entry point for watches that feel different, special.

The fact that Swriss is able to offer these type of watches with this attention to detail means that everyone would be able to enjoy something unique regardless of their budget.

In my opinion any of these watches can provide lots of fun at a price point that doesn’t break the bank. They really are a good alternative not only to Swatch but also to share with anyone who is starting on the hobby.

We have more coming from this brand and I am sure that you will be surprised too on the direction they are going. Stay tuned.
