Bright Summer Watch, Minimalist Wear: Milifortic S117

The perfect warm-weather watch is bright without being daft. You want a proper hit of colour on the dial, turquoise, orange, sunshine yellow, and of course red, something that looks at home by the sea or in a pub garden. It also needs to be legible, with big, bold numerals, strong contrast, and decent lume so you can read it at a glance in full sun or when it turns a bit gloomy later on. It should feel playful, but still like a serious tool rather than a novelty.

Just as important, it has to handle day to day life without fuss. Ideally you want at least 100 m of water resistance, or 200 m if you genuinely spend a lot of time in the water, plus a screw-down crown for a bit of extra peace of mind. And the strap needs to be tough. FKM rubber or a sturdy nylon NATO is ideal, since it can take sweat, sunscreen, sand, and seawater, then rinse clean under the tap. In short, it should be colourful, easy to read, water-ready, and durable enough to wear anywhere.

Milifortic’s S117 from the Summer line delivers the spirit of all that with a pared-back approach. It is minimal in a way that lets you enjoy the simplicity of the design, with no unnecessary clutter, while still staying precise and dependable. For the money, and for the way it is put together, it is the kind of watch that can remind you what is fun about the hobby in the first place.

Let’s get into it.

The specifications

After wearing it on my 6.25 inch wrist, the sizing feels spot on. The 38 mm case sits centred and balanced, and the 46 mm lug to lug length keeps it neatly on the wrist with no overhang. Even though it measures 41.7 mm including the crown, it does not wear wide in practice. The crown is easy to use, but the overall profile still looks clean and restrained.

The dial is the main attraction. It is a strong, bright red, but it is not a flat paint. There is a subtle shimmer that catches the light as you move your wrist, so it can look deeper and slightly richer at certain angles. The small seconds subdial at 6 adds structure and contrast. That pale, almost off-white register breaks up the red field and makes the lower half feel more technical, with fine markings that add detail without making the design feel busy.

The numeral layout is the real talking point. It uses a California style mix, with Roman numerals up top and Arabic numerals down below, plus simple batons in between. It sounds unusual on paper, but it works on the wrist because your eye gets clear anchors at 12, 10, 2, 8, and 4. It also suits the minimal case, giving the watch a bit of vintage character, while the crisp printing and lume keep it modern and easy to live with.

Inside is the VD78 quartz calibre, which is exactly the point. It is a fit and forget movement that runs on a battery and keeps steady time without any fuss. There is no winding, no power reserve to think about, and no concern about how active you have been. You just pick it up and go.

On the wrist

What stands out most is how light and minimal it feels. The simple 316L steel case and quartz movement make it effortless as a daily wear. The 20 mm strap gives it a tidy, straight look from the lugs, and on the fabric strap it sits close to the wrist and stays put. The bold numerals and high contrast dial make it quick to read, so it remains practical while still feeling calm and uncluttered.

In use, it fits into more situations than you might expect from such a bold colour. The clean case means it dresses up and down easily, and the red shimmer dial gives it enough personality to feel special even with a plain T shirt. I have worn it with everything from trainers and gym kit to a casual shirt and blazer, and it still looks like it belongs. It is only in very formal settings that I would hesitate, simply because the colour is meant to be seen rather than kept discreet.

One thing I did not expect is how well the design plays with different straps and changes the whole mood of the watch. On the grey fabric it leans modern and understated, almost like a piece of kit, with the red dial doing the talking. Swap to a white or sand NATO and it looks lighter and more relaxed, while black rubber gives it a sharper, sportier edge that suits training and everyday knocks. Even on a simple tan leather strap it takes on a slightly more vintage feel and makes the California numerals look even more intentional, which is rare at this price point.

Concluding thoughts

As a package, it feels far more considered than the price suggests. For 115 USD you get a 316L stainless steel case, a multi-colour dial range with a genuinely eye-catching finish, a distinctive California layout with luminous printing, and a dependable VD78 quartz movement with small seconds that keeps things simple and accurate. It also wears well on a smaller wrist, thanks to the 38 mm case and compact lug to lug measurement, so it looks intentional rather than oversized. Taken together, it is a genuine bargain because the design and everyday usability land well above what you normally expect at this level.

This watch is for someone who wants a clean, modern piece with a bit of character, and who values practicality over status. It suits anyone building an affordable rotation, anyone with a slimmer wrist who struggles with larger cases, and anyone who wants one watch that can handle commuting, weekends, and training sessions without feeling precious. If you prefer muted colours or strictly traditional styling it may not be for you, but if you like bold dials, clear legibility, and a no-fuss movement, it is easy to recommend.
