Hands-On: The Parea Sector Purple Plum - A Refreshing Slice of Vintage Coolness

The inspiration behind Parea is beautifully positive, rooted in an ancient Greek concept of a close circle of friends gathering to enjoy life and share their passions. The founder’s relationship with time began in a very personal way back in 2001, when a Type 1 diabetes diagnosis at just 5 years old meant that tracking time became a daily necessity rather than an abstract concept. Instead of letting this be a burden, he channeled this deep awareness of passing hours into a lifelong fascination with watches. After years of collaborating with designers, artists, and watchmakers, he turned this joy into launching Parea in 2025. The brand is based in Sydney but embraces an honest, global approach. They source their precision parts from specialists in Hong Kong, premium leather from Germany, and reliable Japanese movements, before doing all the final assembly and regulation in Australia to make sure everything is perfect.

Their debut collection is simply named the Sector, and I have been spending some quality time with the Purple Plum version. While traditional sector dials can sometimes look a bit too academic, Parea has breathed new life into the style by injecting a wonderful splash of color. Choosing a rich plum tone is a brave move, but they have executed it with real maturity. It honors the classic layout while giving the watch a completely distinct personality, and it is a really exciting piece to look at in detail.

The specifications

The proportions of this watch are spot on. The stainless steel case is 39mm wide, with a very wearable 46mm lug-to-lug, and it measures just 10.6mm thick including the domed sapphire crystal. Parea has done something very creative with the case finishing, mixing high-polished surfaces with soft sandblasted sections to create a wonderful contrast that plays with light in a really modern way.

The dial itself is where the real artistry happens. Parea has utilized three distinct textures to define the sectors. The central section has a beautiful, organic granular finish that feels incredibly tactile. Right outside that is a ring decorated with concentric 3D guilloché lines that ripple beautifully in the light, and this is bordered by a smooth outer track. The plum color is incredibly dynamic, shifting from a bright, juicy berry shade in direct light to a deep, dark aubergine in the shadows. The hours are marked with cool, retro-styled numerals at the even intervals, leaving the rest of the dial clean.

The hands are classic syringe shape with very fine, delicate tips that track the sector lines perfectly. They are filled with Swiss Super-LumiNova BGW9, which glows a crisp, icy blue in the dark and ensures the watch is highly legible at night.

Powering the watch is the high-beat Miyota 9039 automatic movement. It is a premium Japanese caliber running at 28,800 vibrations per hour, which Parea hand-regulates in Sydney to a very impressive plus-minus 10 seconds a day. Around the back, the sapphire display window shows off a great view of the movement, which has been upgraded with a bespoke skeletonized rotor. It is a fantastic touch that makes the back of the watch look just as refined as the front. You also get a solid 50m of water resistance, which is more than enough for daily protection.

On the Wrist

On my 6.25-inch wrist, the Sector feels absolutely brilliant. Thanks to the curved lugs and the slim 10.6mm profile, it sits incredibly low and wraps around the arm with ease. It has plenty of character without ever feeling bulky.

I received the watch on a gorgeous, handmade grey suede strap, which also came with a matching smooth calfskin strap. The grey suede is a superb pairing because the neutral tone acts as a perfect backdrop, allowing that vibrant plum dial to take center stage. It is beautifully soft and required zero breaking-in time. If you wanted to try something a bit different, swapping it onto a dark navy Saffiano leather strap would look fantastic, as the blue tones would play beautifully off the purple dial and the blue-glowing BGW9 lume.

It is a highly versatile watch to wear. It is smart enough to act as an elegant dress piece for a dinner party, but the playful color and textured dial make it casual enough to pair with a simple t-shirt on the weekend. It is the perfect companion for social gatherings, making it a great conversation starter that feels very aligned with the brand's friendly ethos.
