In a world of smartwatches, be a digital one - RZE UTD-8000 Deep Purple

Smartwatches are everywhere now. They are useful, but they also turn your wrist into another screen that demands attention. I catch myself checking notifications without thinking, and it gets old quickly. That is why a proper digital watch still makes loads of sense. It gives you the time instantly, it stays accurate, and it does not drag you into apps and alerts. It also feels more durable and more carefree, especially if you are the type to knock your watch on door frames and desks.

A digital can be a step back in the best way. Less noise, more function, and no charging routine. That is where RZE comes in. The brand leans into adventure and toughness, and the UTD-8000 is a modern take on the digital tool watch, built to be worn hard and not fussed over.

RZE launched in 2020 with a clear focus on watches for the everyday adventurer. The brand takes inspiration from aerospace use of titanium, mainly for its strength to weight ratio, and it builds its cases in solid Grade 2 titanium. RZE also uses its UltraHex coating, which is designed to boost scratch resistance and keep the watch looking cleaner for longer. The whole message is about turning limitation into strength and making watches that can handle real life. You get the sense they design for people who actually wear their watches, not just photograph them.

Over the last five years RZE has focused on accessible, tough, titanium tool watches, and a repeated request from customers was better shock and vibration resistance. The UTD, or UltraHex Titanium Digital, is the answer. By developing a custom digital module, RZE is aiming for proper durability without making the watch feel like a cheap plastic beater.

Designed and tested in the harsh environment of the Canadian North, the UTD-8000 is built to resist water, dust, corrosion, scratches, shock, and vibrations. RZE also claims it remains fully operational even when it is exposed to extreme temperatures. This Deep Purple version pairs a negative display with a purple dial ring inspired by the purple and black tones of a bad bruise, which fits the impact theme perfectly.

The specifications

The UTD-8000 Deep Purple comes in a solid Grade 2 titanium case with UltraHex coating and shock resistance. The case measures 43mm at the bezel, or 42mm at the case, with a thickness of 13.4mm. Lug to lug is 49.5mm and lug width is 20mm, which is great for strap options. On paper it reads large, but titanium changes the experience because it keeps the weight down and stops it feeling top heavy.

The design is properly tool like, with a mostly brushed finish that suits the material and helps hide daily wear. The bezel screws add a rugged, almost industrial look, and the caseback is a screw secured titanium piece, which matches the overall no nonsense vibe.

The dial layout is clean and segmented, so you can take in the information quickly. The negative display gives you that stealthy digital look, with light digits on a darker background. Then you get the purple ring, and it is what makes this version special. It is not a bright playful purple. It is darker and moodier, and it works well against the grey titanium. It makes the watch feel modern and a bit different, while still staying tough.

On top is a sapphire crystal with inner side anti reflective coating. That is a standout spec for a digital at this price and it adds to the premium feel. The backlight is an aqua marine LED called UltraGlow, and it is clear and usable in the dark.

The movement is RZE’s custom UTD-8000 multi function digital module. Battery life is rated at over three years, which is exactly what I want from a digital. Water resistance is 200 metres or 20ATM, so it is properly swim ready and holiday proof, rather than just rain safe.

On the wrist

My wrist is 6.25 inches, so I usually approach bigger tool watches with a bit of caution. The UTD-8000 is definitely not a small watch, but it wears better than I expected. The 49.5mm lug to lug puts it close to the edges of my wrist, yet it stays stable and does not feel awkward. The big reason is the titanium case. It keeps the weight low, so you get the look of a substantial digital without that heavy, blocky feeling that some rugged watches have.

Comfort is helped massively by the elasticised fabric strap. It wears a lot like a parachute style strap, with a bit of stretch that makes it easy to dial in the fit. It sits snug without feeling tight, and it stays comfortable across a full day. It also suits the watch visually. The black strap keeps things understated and it lets the purple detail do its thing without shouting.

If you want to change the vibe, I think a plain black rubber strap would be a great match. It would lean into the 200m water resistance and make it feel even more like a go anywhere beater. The other obvious option is the RZE titanium bracelet, which is coated to match the case and comes with a QUIKCLIQ on the fly buckle. That bracelet option makes it feel more like an everyday all rounder, and it would be the one I would pick if I wanted to wear it more often with casual office clothes.

As for the best environment, this is a brilliant travel and weekend watch. It is also ideal for days when you want to disconnect a bit. You get the accuracy and functionality of a digital, but you are not dragged into notifications and charging habits. It feels like gear, in a good way.

Concluding thoughts

At £255, the UTD-8000 Deep Purple lands in a sweet spot. It is obviously more money than a basic classic digital, but it is also miles away from the price of the serious metal G-Shocks. If you look at something like a full metal G-Shock at around £550, the RZE starts to look like a bargain for what it is trying to offer. You are still getting a tough digital tool watch, but with titanium, sapphire, and a more stripped back design language, for less than half the money.

That matters because the appeal of the metal G-Shocks is not just toughness. It is the premium materials and the feel on the wrist. RZE is chasing a similar idea, but doing it in its own way. Titanium makes a huge difference here. It keeps the weight down, which makes it easier to wear all day, and it gives the watch a more refined feel without losing the rugged edge. The sapphire crystal is another big tick, and it is something I wish more digitals offered at sensible prices.

In day to day use, the UTD-8000 feels like a watch I can genuinely forget about. The battery with over three years of life means no charging routine, and the 200m water resistance means I do not have to think twice about swimming, rain, or general abuse. The Deep Purple colourway is also a nice reminder that tool watches do not have to be boring. It has character, but it still feels grown up and wearable.

Who is it for. I would say it is for someone who likes the idea of a rugged digital, but wants something lighter, more premium, and a bit more understated than the usual big resin options. It is also for anyone who wants to step away from smartwatch habits, while still wearing something modern and practical.

Overall, RZE feels refreshing because it is not chasing trends. The UTD-8000 Deep Purple is a proper tool digital with premium materials at a fair price, and it delivers that simple, durable, distraction free experience that made digital watches great in the first place.
