A tribute to an unsung hero – Baltany 1926 Oyster Tribute

There are heroes no one talks about, and watchmaking is no different. With watches, everyone talks about the dial—how it looks—and then the movement: what features it has, how it winds. Even bezels get their fair share of praise among watch nerds. But one area we often forget is the case. It seems unfair, but it is what it is.

The case isn’t just overlooked when it comes time to choose a watch; it’s often ignored entirely. Sure, if the shape is odd enough or the watch doesn’t fit properly, it becomes a deal-breaker—but in the ranking of features, most people don’t pay much attention to it.

That’s why I wanted to get hands-on with this unique Oyster Tribute from Baltany, and it’s also why I like this brand so much. They approach their watches with an enthusiast’s eye. Celebrating one of the most important waterproof case designs—one that has now been around for nearly 100 years—is simply something to admire.

The Baltany Oyster Tribute is not only well made, but also a testament to how a great design can be timeless—both in looks and in technical purpose.

For the past 100 years, the Rolex Oyster case has been the brand’s signature answer to one simple question: how do you protect a watch from the real world? Introduced in 1926 as one of the first truly practical waterproof wristwatch cases, the Oyster used a screw-down caseback, a screw-down crown, and a tightly sealed middle case to keep out water and dust—features that Baltany has clearly aimed to echo here.

And those features weren’t just for show. The Oyster case proved itself publicly when swimmer Mercedes Gleitze wore one across the English Channel in 1927. Over the years, the concept was refined with stronger steels, better gaskets, more robust crowns, and incremental improvements in machining and tolerances, all while keeping the same instantly recognizable silhouette.

This watch is an ode to something important, and we’re happy to have this beautiful piece with us. Let’s begin.

Technical specifications

Let’s get to the meat of the review: the case of the Baltany. Unlike many modern cases, the Oyster Tribute feels more organic—mainly because the curves of the lugs and the edge of the mid-case feel like a natural continuation of the design rather than something “stuck on.” The fully polished case brings you back to 1926. It makes the watch look more like jewelry, but make no mistake: this is a capable tool watch.

At 36mm in diameter, the watch feels perfectly proportioned for the style. The proportions are undeniably vintage, and it could easily pass as a watch that has been on a wrist for decades—but the good news is that it’s still a robust, modern watch.

The coin-edge detail at the top of the mid-case is the cherry on top when it comes to vintage cues. It’s well pronounced and cleanly milled—almost like you could grip it and turn it. The sapphire crystal also gives a nice vintage-style distortion, and the inclusion of AR coating makes our black matte dial version much more readable.

You can see the true vintage inspiration on the dial: the radium-style look of the numerals, the thermally blued hands, and the railroad-style subdial make the Oyster Tribute feel like a faithful 1926-inspired piece. The thick aviator-style numerals match the cathedral hands perfectly—it’s a match made in heaven.

The full onion-style screw-down crown is not only beautiful and easy to grip, it also helps deliver 200 meters of water resistance. Yes, you read that correctly—an impressive statement for a watch built to perform.

Under the sterile caseback (which would be perfect for an engraving), you’ll find the Seagull ST1701 automatic mechanical movement. It’s a great choice: it helps keep the watch affordable, and it also keeps it very thin—more on that in a moment.

On the wrist

As mentioned, the movement isn’t just reliable—it also allows the Oyster Tribute to come in at only 8.8mm thick, which means it basically disappears on the wrist. Combined with the 43.3mm lug-to-lug length, my 6.25-inch wrist has rarely been this comfortable. It feels like a second skin—just a joy to wear.

The Oyster Tribute comes on a vintage-style black leather strap (18mm wide), and it suits the era perfectly. That said, because of the black dial, this watch is going to be a strap monster. You could easily throw it on a grey suede strap or a distressed green one and it would look fantastic.

I wore the Oyster Tribute mostly at the office and at home. It’s not only versatile, it’s also a great companion for an understated look. It feels right in almost any setting, and even on a more active day, a nylon strap would work well—sure, it’s not period-correct, but as I’ve said, it’s a strap monster.

Legibility is also great, aided by the anti-reflective coating and the numerals filled with Swiss Super-LumiNova “Yellow Oil.” This watch is ready to impress.

It would definitely look great in a more elegant setting, but the 200 meters of water resistance are a genuinely welcome addition. It reaches depth ratings that many divers don’t, and that’s a true tribute to the Oyster concept.

Concluding thoughts

There’s no denying that there are real enthusiasts at Baltany who understand what we love. The attention to detail and respect put into this watch makes it feel like far more of a bargain than it has any right to be.

Which brings us to the price: the Oyster Tribute costs £190. I don’t need to tell you that, for a vintage-inspired design with 200 meters of water resistance, this is outstanding value.

The quality of the printing and case finishing is something I’ve rarely seen at this price point. Head over to the site and check out the other variants available. Our black version offers the best of two worlds, but with the growing appetite for mother-of-pearl dials, perhaps that one is for you.
