Squaring the perfect Circle:the Maven SquareC

Maven is a watch brand born in the bustling heart of Hong Kong, a unique city where towering urban skyscrapers and lush natural landscapes coexist in perfect harmony. This dual inspiration runs deeply through their design philosophy, resulting in timepieces that are modern, clean, and filled with architectural character. They believe that well-designed objects should bring moments of tranquil joy to modern daily living, focusing on a minimalist aesthetic that is always accompanied by a sharp edge of personality. Rather than offering sterile minimalism, they collaborate with local, experienced watch mechanics who inherited their skills from the golden age of the Hong Kong watch industry. The result is a collection of authentic, durable watches that carry a genuine sense of craftsmanship.

With the SquareC collection, Maven has reimagined their established MUS series by introducing a softly squared cushion case. They often refer to this silhouette as the "Squarc", an intriguing portmanteau of square and circle. It is a shape that beautifully bridges the gap between historical military field watches and contemporary urban design. The continuous line flowing from the case directly into the short, integrated-style lugs gives the watch a highly cohesive, sculptural appearance. By simplifying the dial layout and focusing on matte textures, Maven has created a piece that feels both incredibly fresh and reassuringly classic.

I have one of the five models available with me and we are going to dive deep into this blue beauty. Let's begin.

The specifications

Looking closely at the physical attributes of the Maven SquareC, the case is constructed from high-quality 316L stainless steel. It measures 35mm in width by 43mm in length, which represents an incredibly thoughtful set of dimensions for a non-circular watch. Because square and cushion-shaped watches naturally occupy more surface area on the arm, these proportions ensure that the watch retains a strong visual presence without ever feeling oversized. The entire steel case is treated with a uniform matte sandblasted finish, giving it a muted, slate-grey appearance that is highly reminiscent of tactical military gear. This bead-blasted texture is superb at resisting fingerprints and diffusing light, which highlights the soft curves of the cushion shape.

The navy blue dial has a beautiful, matte finish that provides a deep, ink-like backdrop for the timekeeping elements. Maven has opted for an asymmetrical layout featuring a single row of Arabic numerals, but they have uniquely chosen to print only the even numbers. The hours twelve, two, four, six, eight, and ten are rendered in a clean, sans-serif white font, while the odd hours are represented by simple, understated baton markers. This balanced arrangement brings an elegant clarity to the face of the watch while preserving a playful, modern character. A white railroad-style minute track surrounds the dial, featuring small printed circular dots at each hour position to aid quick reading. At the three o'clock position, a small date window is framed by a crisp white border, utilising a white date wheel with black text that integrates seamlessly into the overall layout.

The handset consists of polished baton-style hour and minute hands with rounded ends, both filled with luminous material. A vibrant orange needle serves as the running second hand, matching the orange "AUTOMATIC" text printed just above the six o'clock position and injecting a lively pop of colour into the dark navy dial. This orange accent provides a stellar contrast, giving the watch an energetic, sporty undertone that saves it from looking too formal. Protecting this dial is a high-grade domed sapphire crystal, which curves gently toward the bezel to soften the overall thickness of the watch.

Powering the SquareC is the Japanese Miyota 8215 automatic movement, a legendary workhorse calibre known for its exceptional reliability and easy servicing. Beating at 21,600 vibrations per hour, this mechanical movement features hand-winding and has a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. The movement winds in a single direction, meaning you can occasionally hear and feel the rotor spinning freely inside the case, a characteristic that adds a lovely, mechanical soul to the watch. In my daily testing, the movement has performed admirably, settling into a highly respectable daily accuracy of about plus nine seconds.

The watch is paired with a genuine Italian leather strap in a rich, warm brown tone. This strap measures 20mm at the lugs, featuring a subtle taper and a matching matte silver buckle. It is equipped with quick-release spring bars, allowing for effortless, tool-free strap changes whenever you want to dress the watch down on a grey canvas strap or elevate it with a black leather band. To ensure everyday practicality, the SquareC offers a water resistance of 50m, which is equivalent to 5ATM of pressure, making it perfectly suited to survive light rain, splashes, and the daily chores of modern life.

On my wrist

When I first strapped the Maven SquareC onto my 6.25-inch wrist, I was immediately struck by how perfectly balanced it felt. Cushion-shaped cases can be notoriously difficult to size correctly, as even a tiny increase in width can make a square watch wear like a heavy block. However, the 35mm width of this watch is absolute perfection for a smaller wrist size. Because the corners are softly rounded and the lugs curve down sharply, the watch wraps around my 6.25-inch wrist in an incredibly organic, comfortable way. The lug-to-lug distance of 43mm is exceptionally compact, meaning the lugs sit well within the flat top of my arm, with zero overhang.

At 11.5mm in thickness, the watch has a surprisingly slim visual profile. A large part of this is due to the clever engineering of the case sides and the beautifully domed sapphire crystal. The dome on the crystal draws the eye upward, while the matte grey finish of the mid-case breaks up the vertical height. As a result, the watch slips under a tight shirt cuff without any struggle, making it an excellent candidate for a versatile daily wearer that easily transitions from a casual weekend outfit to more formal office wear. The matte finish of the 316L stainless steel feels exceptionally smooth against the skin, and the lighter weight of the watch makes it incredibly easy to wear for twelve hours straight without any wrist fatigue.

The brown Italian leather strap is another highlight of the wearing experience. It is remarkably soft and supple right out of the box, requiring absolutely no break-in period. The warm brown leather pairs wonderfully with the deep navy dial and the matte grey steel case, creating a highly sophisticated colour palette. On my 6.25-inch wrist, I am using the third smallest adjustment hole, which leaves a neat amount of excess tail that is easily secured by the two leather keepers. The quick-release spring bars are a fantastic addition; I have already experimented with swapping the brown leather for a sand-coloured suede strap, which completely changes the personality of the watch, shifting it toward a rugged field watch aesthetic.

The crown is located at the traditional three o'clock position and has a fine, ridged texture that provides plenty of grip. It is a push-pull crown, which fits the 50m water resistance rating and makes setting the time and date incredibly straightforward. Because of the compact case size and the curved lug profile, the crown never digs into the back of my hand when I bend my wrist, which is a common issue with larger square watches. The legibility is outstanding in almost all lighting conditions, thanks to the high contrast between the white hands, the orange second hand, and the navy dial. In low-light environments, the blue lume on the hands and even-hour numerals glows with a cold, clear light that is highly readable, absorbing light quickly and holding its charge well into the evening.

Concluding thoughts

The Maven SquareC is a highly successful design that manages to carve out its own unique space in a market saturated with repetitive round watches. By combining the soft curves of a circle with the structure of a square, Maven has created a timepiece that feels architectural, modern, and incredibly wearable. It successfully blends the rugged charm of a vintage military watch with the clean, sophisticated lines of a contemporary dress piece, making it a highly versatile addition to any collection.

Beyond this stunning navy model, Maven offers the SquareC in four other highly appealing colourways, each bringing a completely distinct personality to the wrist. There is a serene off-white dial matched with a sand-coloured strap, which feels incredibly light and airy; a rich forest green variant paired with a black strap that lends a subtle, earthy sophistication; an ice blue option on a cream strap that looks wonderfully crisp; and a deep chocolate brown version on a black strap for a more vintage, warm appearance. This diverse range of choices ensures that there is a palette to suit almost any personal style or occasion; the ice blue would look particularly outstanding on my wrist during the summer months

For those of us with a 6.25-inch wrist, finding a square watch that fits properly without overwhelming the arm can be a daunting task. Maven has solved this problem beautifully with the SquareC, offering a compact 35mm footprint that delivers plenty of wrist presence while maintaining superb comfort. At a price of 250 GBP, which is incredibly reasonable for a mechanical watch of this calibre, Maven offers a compelling package for anyone seeking a minimalist design with a genuine edge of personality.
