Building something special – DIY Pilot Watch

Heritage is everything in watchmaking. Where your watch comes from, and the design cues behind it, are what we enthusiasts love to dig into, and the “Flieger” (German pilot watch) is a perfect example.

Rather than focusing on the full history, let’s concentrate on functionality. There’s no denying these watches were designed for maximum legibility. Britain also played a major role in influencing a newer design language, more streamlined than the German A-dials, and one that ultimately inspired the Mark XI. The result was a watch that felt cleaner, more readable, and more pleasing to the eye.

We had the opportunity to build a watch that not only feels special, but also has the quality to back it up, the DIY Pilot Watch.

This isn’t the first watch we’ve built for the brand, and hopefully won’t be the last, but I can honestly say it’s the best so far. The case brushing, the hands, and the overall component quality are on another level.

Join me as we explore something that could genuinely compete with watches costing six times as much.

Building the watch

It’s easier to build a watch with a 40mm case because it gives you plenty of room to work, making assembly more straightforward. The matte dial is a joy, it reduces reflections and makes the hands stand out, so legibility is excellent. The hands are classic pilot style with a slightly creamy lume that feels period-correct, while the long seconds hand reaches the edge of the dial. It’s all highly functional, very British and very German at the same time.

The case is a highlight. Not only do the components fit beautifully, but the finishing is outstanding. I genuinely don’t know how DIY managed to keep the price where it is when the brushing is so consistent. The half-onion crown, with its sharp knurling, is good enough to put some big brands to shame.

All the markers are printed, and that warm beige colour looks straight out of the 40s. The main plate, hands, and crystal manage to feel vintage while being made with modern techniques, and it’s down to the economies of scale DIY has achieved.

What about the movement? Putting the Miyota 8250 to the test was a privilege. Watching the “heartbeat” start as you add the stem is something not many people get to experience, and the feeling is hard to replicate. The specs are strong too, no ghost date, reliable performance, and 42 hours of power reserve, all controlled by that beautiful half-onion crown.

On the wrist

Once assembled, the watch measures 40mm wide and 12.3mm thick, which means it wears beautifully on my 6.25-inch wrist. Even at 40mm, it has an under-48mm lug-to-lug length, something many heritage brands get wrong when they chase a larger wrist presence.

The Pilot comes on a great green canvas strap, though there are upgrade options. That said, the included strap is excellent, it matches the watch’s spirit and enhances it. The angular buckle is a standout on its own, sharp, rugged, and thoughtfully designed.

I’ve worn the Pilot everywhere, the gym, the office, and at home. It’s a true GADA watch. Nothing else in my watch box comes close, and maybe that’s because I assembled it. It really does feel like your creation in a way few watches can.

The quality of the components, and the tools, also deserves mention. A great design means nothing if the parts aren’t precise enough to build, and DIY Club delivers here, the Pilot is no exception.

Concluding thoughts

The price is the headline, starting at £290, it’s outstanding value for what you actually get. Even judging it purely as a finished watch, the finishing, proportions, and overall coherence feel well above this bracket, it doesn’t just copy the pilot look, it captures the feel.

What really elevates it is the build itself. Putting it together creates a connection you don’t get from a normal purchase, you understand the watch, you notice the details, and you end up wearing it with more pride. The Miyota 8250 is also a smart match for the concept, it’s dependable, easy to live with, and suits a daily tool watch perfectly.

If you like pilot watches and you like the idea of earning one by building it, this kit is one of the strongest value propositions I’ve come across, and it stands tall next to watches that cost far more.
