When future meets the classic – MONOGRIIS Resta

In watches, value is key for me, but there are other characteristics that matter too. Design is important, of course, but size, quality and simplicity—though subjective—also play a major role when choosing my next piece.
Vintage watches often have the perfect proportions, but as time passes they can become less reliable and, aesthetically, they tend to deteriorate. So what if you could have the best of both worlds? This is an idea many brands have explored lately, and the resurgence of vintage-inspired timepieces is everywhere—but have they found the right formula?

We often see beautiful 1950s design traits spoiled by larger diameters and thicker cases. Yes, off-the-shelf movements can limit what can be done, but there’s still merit in trying to find a creative solution and arriving at the right destination.
This is where I came across the Japanese brand MONOGRIIS. It has been around for a while, but recently it has refocused its purpose. The company started in Osaka aiming at high-quality fashion watches—well made, but a little removed from the hobby we all love. Over time, they realised there is something special about a mechanical piece: something less disposable, more enduring.
I was lucky to speak with them as they chose this new direction, and even luckier to try their first iteration: the Resta.
The Resta not only feels true to a watch conceived in a golden era of elegance; it also blends style with modern practicality. From the reliable movement to the design—and then the price—it ticks all the boxes we watch nerds love. Join me as we discover what a classic watch should feel like. Let’s begin.
The Specifications

With a 36 mm case, we’re off to a great start. The polished stainless-steel case is not only well executed, but almost a work of art—highlighted by those sharp crab lugs. Traditionally, crab lugs are curved, sweeping lugs that resemble a crab’s claws as they extend from the case to hold the strap or bracelet. On the Resta, they feel more futuristic—slightly more Art Deco—and I’m all for it.
The dial is another element I really enjoy. The eggshell shade is subtle, and it contrasts nicely with the brushed centre seconds hand. It’s understated, yet it makes the Resta more legible and refined. The elongated numerals feel period-correct, and each marker is accompanied by a small gold dot—a detail that doesn’t shout; it whispers. Overall, the sum of these small nuances creates a truly distinctive watch.
The blued observatory-style hands are also welcome. The design may look classical, but it adds charm and helps distinguish the Resta from the competition—especially if, like many of us, you’re tired of pencil hands. The seconds hand matches that blue hue, while the printed brand name and “Japan Made” at 6 o’clock are the only other dial text.

Turn the watch over and you get another view of those lugs—they’re hard to resist. The caseback is open, letting you see the architecture of the Miyota Cal. 8N40. I’ve never quite understood why more brands don’t use this movement; it has depth and genuinely interesting finishing. The watch also offers 50 metres of water resistance and, with the crown positioned at 4:30, it’s a looker.
On the wrist
This is where the Resta really excels on the wrist. The shape of those lugs (yes, I’m a fan) helps the strap sit closer and follow the curve of the wrist, improving comfort. The 10.5 mm thickness is also impressive, and the domed sapphire crystal distorts the edges in a pleasing way—it’s a great look.
The lug-to-lug is compact at 45 mm, which means that on my 6.25-inch wrist the Resta feels right at home. The watch comes on a high-quality Saffiano leather strap; in our case, the black looks spot on. With the added quick-release feature, swapping straps is a breeze.
I wore the Resta at the office and it felt perfectly at home. It’s quiet, elegant and discreet, yet the quality is high enough to make you smile whenever you check the time. The fully polished case feels appropriate for the era it references, and while it’s definitely a dressy watch, with the right outfit it could easily become an everyday companion.

Conlcuding thoughts
The Resta comes in three variations: our eggshell beige dial with blue accents; a similar version with gold hands for a more luxurious feel; and a black dial version—which may be my favourite combination. Any of them would be a great choice.
We still haven’t reached the best part: the price. All of this attention to detail comes in at £211, which is outstanding for such a distinctive watch. The unique case shape and that gorgeous dial make it a compelling proposition.
The people at MONOGRIIS have done well with this transition. They’ve launched three models that feel timeless—not only in design, but also in how they’re put together. The Resta is a testament to evolution and to genuine watch enthusiasm, and it’s a brand we should definitely keep on our radar.
